GATE 2025 Registrations Surge 13% as PSUs Prioritize Scores for Engineering Recruitment

New Delhi, India | July 12, 2024 — Registrations for the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) 2025 have risen by 13%, driven by growing demand from Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs) leveraging scores for recruitment. Over 9.36 lakh candidates, including dual-subject aspirants, will take the exam starting February 1, 2025, across 709 centers in India.

Organized by IIT Roorkee, the computer-based test introduces relaxed eligibility criteria—allowing third-year undergraduates to apply—and expanded interdisciplinary options. “PSUs increasingly rely on GATE to identify talent, making it a gateway to stable careers,” said Prof. Kamal Kishore Pant, Director of IIT Roorkee. The exam now offers 30 subjects, including the high-demand Data Science & AI paper, with new two-paper combinations for arts and science graduates.

Key Drivers of Growth:

  • PSU Recruitment: Over 15 PSUs, including ONGC and NTPC, now use GATE scores for hiring.
  • Eligibility Expansion: Third-year students can now attempt the exam, with scores valid for three years.
  • Gender Diversity: Female registrations rose slightly, reflecting broader accessibility.

Last year, only 1.29 lakh of 8.26 lakh candidates qualified, underscoring the exam’s competitiveness. To address this, IIT Roorkee has launched mock tests and increased test centers by 17% to reduce logistical barriers.

Exam Structure & Guidelines:

  • Dates: February 1, 2, 15, 16 (two daily shifts).
  • Pattern: 100 marks across General Aptitude, Engineering Math, and subject-specific sections.
  • Security: Enhanced protocols, including biometric checks and encrypted question papers.

Candidates must carry admit cards and ID proof, while electronic devices remain banned. A virtual calculator and scribble pad will be provided.

With registrations hitting a five-year high, GATE 2025 cements its role as a critical benchmark for India’s engineering talent.
