Encroachments Near Bus Stand Demolished in Nandurbar Amid Citizens Relief

Nandurbar: In a decisive move against unauthorized constructions, the Nandurbar Municipal Council, with police assistance, demolished 10 to 12 encroached houses and shops near the city’s bus stand on Friday. The area, including old dairy premises near the agricultural union’s warehouse, had been the subject of long-standing complaints from residents, citing nuisance caused by illegal businesses.

Notices Ignored, Bulldozers in Action

Despite receiving eviction notices two days prior, residents failed to vacate the encroachments. Under the leadership of probationary Chief Officer Dr. V.G.S. Pawandatta, municipal bulldozers began demolishing the illegal structures around 1 PM. The operation extended to the Station Road area by evening, targeting roadside shanties and unauthorized extensions, including makeshift pavilions of food stalls.

Public Reaction and Police Support

The crackdown, which drew significant onlookers, required police intervention to manage the crowd. Three officers and 30 police personnel, including eight women officers, ensured smooth execution. Traffic police also managed vehicular flow during the operation.

Call for Further Action

While the demolition received widespread support, citizens are now demanding similar action in other parts of the city, particularly in areas like Station Road and Shastri Market, which are heavily encroached and obstruct traffic.

The municipality’s move has been lauded as a step toward restoring civic order, with expectations rising for broader measures against illegal structures across the city.
