Nandurbar, Maharashtra – A male Indian civet, aged approximately 7-8 years, was killed in a hit-and-run accident near Akkalkuva village on the Ankleshwar-Bhanapur Highway late Tuesday night. The incident occurred around 1:30 AM near the Forest Colony area, 2 km from Akkalkuva. Passersby alerted local police and forest officials after discovering the critically injured civet, which succumbed to its injuries before rescue teams arrived. A post-mortem confirmed the cause of death, and the carcass was buried by forest authorities.
The Maharashtra Forest Department has launched an investigation to identify the vehicle involved. “Such incidents highlight the urgent need for wildlife corridors and speed regulation on highways bordering forested zones,” stated a senior forest official. Civets, protected under India’s Wildlife Protection Act, face growing threats from habitat fragmentation and road accidents.
